چکیده

The recent paper by Heymsfield et al. (2006, hereafter H06) comments on the accuracy of various in situ measurements of the extinction coefficient by in situ cloud probes. The measurements have particular relevance for their contribution to understanding cloudradiative properties. Climate models are largely concerned with predicting fields of electromagnetic radiation. However, they instead track constituent phase and mass. To relate phase and mass to the shortwave and longwave radiative flux divergences, values of are obtained using the parameterized radiative length scale known as the effective radius re. From the cloud condensed-phase mass density, or water content (WC),

Doppler Cloud Radar Derived Drop Size Distributions in Liquid Water Stratus Clouds

A cloud particle size retrieval algorithm that uses radar reflectivity factor and Doppler velocity obtained by a 35-GHz Doppler radar and liquid water path estimated from microwave radiometer radiance measurements is developed to infer the size distribution of stratus cloud particles. Assuming a constant, but unknown, number concentration with height, the algorithm retrieves the number concentr...

Intercomparisons Between Remote and In Situ Measurements of Ice Cloud Microphysics During the Spring 1997 Cloud IOP

The spring 1997 Cloud Intensive Observation Period (IOP) was conducted at the Southern Great Plains (SGP) Cloud and Radiation Testbed (CART) site during April 1997. The objectives of this IOP included comprehensive testing of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program’s millimeter-wave cloud radar (MMCR) and verifications of several cloud retrieval algorithms by comparisons of the remo...

In Situ Balloon-Borne Ice Particle Imaging in High-Latitude Cirrus

Cirrus clouds reflect incoming solar radiation, creating a cooling effect. At the same time, these clouds absorb the infrared radiation from the Earth, creating a greenhouse effect. The net effect, crucial for radiative transfer, depends on the cirrus microphysical properties, such as particle size distributions and particle shapes. Knowledge of these cloud properties is also needed for calibra...

Continental Stratus Clouds: A Case Study Using Coordinated Remote Sensing and Aircraft Measurements

A continental stratus cloud layer was studied by advanced ground-based remote sensing instruments and aircraft probes on 30 April 1994 from the Cloud and Radiation Testbed site in north-central Oklahoma. The boundary layer structure clearly resembled that of a cloud-topped mixed layer, and the cloud content is shown to be near adiabatic up to the cloud-top entrainment zone. A cloud retrieval al...

A solar reflectance method for retrieving the optical thickness and droplet size of liquid water clouds over snow and ice surfaces

Cloud optical thickness and droplet effective radius retrievals from solar reflectance measurements are traditionally implemented using a combination of spectral channels that are absorbing and nonabsorbing for water particles. Reflectances in nonabsorbing channels (e.g., 0.67, 0.86, 1.2 mm spectral window bands) are largely dependent on cloud optical thickness, while longer-wavelength absorbin...
